All Mathcamp staff and students are required to carry medical insurance for the entire duration of camp.
Students whose regular insurance does not cover them at camp (including all students from outside the US) must purchase travel medical insurance. This should cost around $35 USD for US residents, $100 CAD for Canadians, and about $45-55 USD for other international students. It can be purchased online or from most travel agents.
Important: Travel medical insurance must be bought before you leave home! You cannot purchase it once you are at Mathcamp.
Instructions for purchasing medical insurance online (Last Updated April 2018):
We recommend "Travel Insured Worldwide Trip Protector": it is a travel insurance policy offers medical insurance with low deductibles. For US residents, basic medical coverage starts around $37.
To buy insurance, begin by filling out this form. (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)
This will give you a quote for Travel Insured, probably around $34. Click "Buy Now."
On the right side, under Product, click "View Policy" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. You can get details at the link "Click here to view the policy certificate." First, verify your eligibility: some policies have age restrictions (over 15, for example); others restrict the distance of the travel destination from the traveler's home (more than 100 miles away, for example). Second, verify that your medical coverage is at least $10,000 with a low deductible. When you are satisfied with the plan you have selected, you can move on to purchase it.
Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.
We recommend travel medical insurance for Canadians from Sun Life Financial, which costs around $100 CAD. (Learn more about how travel medical insurance works at the Canadian Government's website.
Start by going to this page and click "Get a Quote". (That link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)
On the next page, you'll get a quote for the "Single Trip Daily Plan (medical coverage only)"; cost may vary by province, but should be around $100 CAD. Plans will cover you in emergencies for up to $5,000,000, provided that you are covered by GHIP in Canada. Click "Full Plan Details" to view the specific terms of the agreement. Be sure to verify that your trip would be covered; some policies have fancy exceptions, like excluding trips which start outside of Canada. When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Buy".
Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.
We recommend the "Patriot America" policy from IMG; basic coverage starts around $45 USD.
To buy insurance, start by going to this form, enter "Unted States" as your destination, and click "Start a Quote." (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)
On the next page, click over to the "Medical" tab and you'll get a list of different insurance policies that you are eligible for. Choose a policy that covers medical expenses for a single trip (we recommend "Patriot America"). Click "Plan info" to see the details of each policy. On the popup window, you can click "Full Certificate" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. (The website will also walk you through the details after you have selected a policy.) Click "Buy this plan" to view and customize your insurance.
First, verify your eligibility; then look at exactly what costs the plan will cover. Most policies will make you pay the first $250 of any medical expenses yourself ("deductible"). They will then pay 80% of the first $5000, and 100% beyond that, up to a maximum of $50,000. For a few extra dollars, you can decrease the deductible to $100 or $0 by checking a box at the bottom of the "Buy Plan" page. (This is optional, but recommended.) You can select "None" for the travel suppliers: you are purchasing medical coverage, not trip cancelation insurance. When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Buy this plan."
Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. (Heads up: uncheck any box that invites you to "Stay up to date on all things travel and travel insurance with our weekly e-newsletter."! It's right before the "Confirm" button at the bottom.) Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.
