Medical Insurance at Mathcamp

All Mathcamp staff and students are required to carry medical insurance for the entire duration of camp.

Students whose regular insurance does not cover them at camp (including all students from outside the US) must purchase travel medical insurance. This should cost around $37 USD for US residents, $90 CAD for Canadians, and about $50 for other international students. It can be purchased online or from most travel agents.

Important: Travel medical insurance must be bought before you leave home! You cannot purchase it once you are at Mathcamp.

Instructions for purchasing medical insurance online (Last Updated March 2017):

US residents

We recommend "My Travel Guard" from Travel Guard Chartis: is is a travel insurance policy that includes 'a la carte' selection, so you can choose medical coverage but decline other things (like baggage coverage and trip cancellation insurance). For US residents, basic medical coverage starts around $37.

To buy insurance, begin by filling out this form. (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • State of Residence: select your state.
  • Destination Country: choose "United States of America".
  • Destination State/Province: choose "Colorado".
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Trip Deposit Date: This has to be a date in the past. Make it yesterday.
  • Final Payment Date: This can be June 24.
  • Trip Cost: put $0. (You're only buying the medical insurance, not trip cancellation insurance.)
  • Birth Date: enter your birth date.
  • Click on "Continue" on the right.

This will give you a quote for My Travel Guard, probably around $37. Click "Customize."

On the right side, under Product, click "Coverage Details" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. Details are in the PDF under 'Description of Coverage or Policy.' First, verify your eligibility: some policies have age restrictions (over 15, for example); others restrict the distance of the travel destination from the traveler's home (more than 24 hours away, for example). Second, verify that your medical coverage is $10,000 with a $50 deductible. For a few extra dollars, you can upgrage this to $50,000 with no deductible, by checking a box in the "Customize with Optional Coverages" section ("Medical expense upgrade, $50,000 secondary"). Whether you want to do this is up to you. When you are satisfied with the plan you have selected, click on "Continue".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.

Canadian residents

We recommend travel medical insurance for Canadians from Sun Life Financial, which costs around $90 CAD. (Learn more about how travel medical insurance works at the Canadian Government's website.

Start by going to this page and click "Get a Quote". (That link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • Are you currently on your trip: no. (Camp hasn't started yet!)
  • You need coverage for: Yourself.
  • You are taking: Just one trip.
  • The trip value is: 0. (You are not buying trip cancellation insurance, just medical insurance.)
  • You'll be traveling to: United States
  • Enter your birthdate and province.
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Click "Next" at the bottom.

On the next page, you'll get a quote for the "Single Trip Daily Plan (medical coverage only)"; cost may vary by province, but should be around $90 CAD. Plans will cover you in emergencies for up to $5,000,000, provided that you are covered by GHIP in Canada. Click "Full Plan Details" to view the specific terms of the agreement. Be sure to verify that your trip would be covered; some policies have fancy exceptions, like excluding trips which start outside of Canada. When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Buy".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.

International students

We recommend the "Atlas America" policy from HCC Medical Insurance Services; basic coverage starts around $55 USD.

To buy insurance, start by filling out this form. (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • Primary Destination: choose "United States - Continental".
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Traveler Ages: enter your current age in the first box.
  • Residence: choose "Other (Neither U.S. Nor Canada)".
  • Citizenship: choose your country of citizenship.
  • Trip Cost: put $0. (You're only interested in the medical insurance, not trip cancellation insurance.)
  • Initial Trip Payment: you may leave blank.
  • Click on "See Plans & Prices".

On the next page, click over to the "Medical" tab and you'll get a list of different insurance policies that you are eligible for. Choose a policy that covers medical expenses for a single trip (we recommend "Atlas America"). Click "View more info" to see the details of each policy. On the popup window, you can click "Full Certificate" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. (The website will also walk you through the details after you have selected a policy.) Click "Buy this plan" to view and customize your insurance.

First, verify your eligibility; then look at exactly what costs the plan will cover. Most policies will make you pay the first $250 of any medical expenses yourself ("deductible"). They will then pay 80% of the first $5000, and 100% beyond that, up to a maximum of $50,000. For a few extra dollars, you can decrease the deductible to $100 or $0 by checking a box at the bottom of the "Buy Plan" page. (This is optional.) You can select "None" for the travel suppliers: you are purchasing medical coverage, not trip cancelation insurance. When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Review and Purchase".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. (Heads up: uncheck the box that invites you to "Stay up to date on all things travel and travel insurance with our weekly e-newsletter."! It's right before the "Confirm" button at the bottom.) Your insurance information will be emailed to you. You'll now be able to submit the policy information with your Mathcamp registration.
