Medical Insurance at Mathcamp

All Mathcamp staff and students are required to carry medical insurance for the entire duration of camp.

Students whose regular insurance does not cover them at camp (including all students from outside the US) must purchase travel medical insurance. This should cost around $35-$40 for US residents and $45-$55 for non-US residents. It can be purchased online or from most travel agents.

Important: Travel medical insurance must be bought before you leave home! You cannot purchase it once you are at Mathcamp.

Instructions for purchasing medical insurance online (Last Updated April 2012):

US residents

We recommend "My Travel Guard" from Travel Guard Chartis: is is a travel insurance that includes 'a la carte' selection, so you can choose medical coverage but decline other things (like baggage coverage and trip cancellation insurance). For US residents, basic medical coverage starts around $35.

To buy insurance, begin by filling out this form. (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • State of Residence: select your state.
  • Destination Country: choose "United States of America".
  • Destination State/Province: choose "Washington".
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Trip Deposit Date: This has to be a date in the past. Make it yesterday.
  • Final Payment Date: This can be July 1.
  • Trip Cost: put $0. (You're only interested in the medical insurance, not trip cancellation insurance.)
  • Birth Date: enter your birth date.
  • Click on "Continue" on the right.

This will give you a quote for My Travel Guard, probably around $35. Click "Customize."

On the right side, under Product, click "Coverage Details" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. Details are in teh PDF under 'Description of Coverage or Policy.' First, verify your eligibility: some policies have age restrictions (over 15, for example); others restrict the distance of the travel destination from the traveler's home (more than 24 hours away, for example). Second, verify that your medical coverage is $10,000 with a $50 deductible. For a few extra dollars, you can upgrage this to $50,000 with no deductible, by checking a box in the "Customize with Optional Coverages" section ("Medical expense upgrade, $50,000 secondary"). Whether you want to do this is up to you. When you are satisfied with the plan you have selected, click on "Continue".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. Print out all the information and bring with you to camp, and be sure to fill in the policy information on the Mathcamp registration page.

Canadian residents

We recommend the "Essential Medical" policy from Travel Guard.

Start by going to this page and clicking "Get a Quote." (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • Select "I am between the age of 0 - 59 and looking for individual or family coverage." for a single trip.
  • Country of Residence: select Canada.
  • State or province of residence: choose your province.
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Enter your name and birthdate.
  • You must select $0 deductible if you are under age 60.
  • Click on "Calculate Quote".

On the next page, you'll get a quote for a Medical Plan; cost may vary by province, but should be around $50. Plans will cover you in emergencies for up to $10,000,000, provided that you are covered by GHIP in Canada. Click "Coverage Details" to view the specific terms of the agreement. (This might not work in some browsers. It worked for us on Internet Explorer. (Sorry!)) Be sure to verify that your trip would be covered; some policies have fancy exceptions, like excluding trips which start outside of Canada. When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Buy".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. Print out all the information and bring with you to camp, and be sure to fill in the policy information on the Mathcamp registration page.

International students

We recommend the "Patriot America" policy from IMG; it provides basic coverage and costs about $50.

To buy insurance, start by filling out this form. (The link will open in a new tab or window, so that you can refer back to these instructions.)

  • For: select All Plans.
  • Trip Cost: put $0. (You're only interested in the medical insurance, not trip cancellation insurance.)
  • Primary Destination: choose "United States - Continental".
  • Departure Date: enter the date on which you will depart for your trip to Mathcamp.
  • Return Date: make it a day or two later than your actual return date, in case you're delayed for some reason.
  • Traveler Ages: enter your current age in the first box.
  • Residence: choose "other".
  • Citizenship: choose your country of citizenship.
  • Initial Trip Payment: you may leave blank.
  • Click on "Quote".

On the next page, you'll get a list of different insurance policies that you are eligible for. Choose the cheapest policies that cover medical expenses (probably "Patriot America", for under $50). Click "View" to see the details of each policy. On the popup window, click "Full Details" to see the plan terms: this (somewhat dense) language tells you exactly what you're buying. First, verify your eligibility; then look at exactly what costs the plan will cover. Most policies will make you pay the first $250 of any medical expenses yourself ("deductible"). They will then pay 80% of the first $5000, and 100% beyond that, up to a maximum of $50,000. For a few extra dollars, you can decrease the deductible to $100 or $0 by checking a box at the bottom of the popup window. (This is optional.) When you are satisfied with your choice of plan, click on "Buy".

Fill in all the necessary information and pay by credit card. Your insurance information will be emailed to you. Print out all the information and bring with you to camp, and be sure to fill in the policy information on the Mathcamp registration page.
